Chrysalis: Personal Tragedy (Nika grew up poor like so many in Nassau in the Bahamas; little did she know that her family carried a Lucayan genetic lineage despite the mixtures with Old World peoples; when old enough, she left home to work and help her parents and little brother out by sending money home—money earned as a dancer and masseuse aboard a Disney-run luxury cruise ship liner; she developed a reputation for promiscuity among her crewmates, and it wasn’t entirely unfounded: she supplemented her income with off-the-books “happy ending massages”; one of the chefs and three seamen took affront that she wouldn’t “give them freebies” and gang-raped her below deck before binding her limbs, weighting her down, and dumping her overboard; the agony of drowning stimulated her long-lost heritage through a fey connection, and she Chrysalized into Aycayia—amphibious and alive, much to her shock), 2006

Key Event #1: Awe & Wonder (from this Rorqual’s shell, she learned who, what, when, why, and how to live as an Aycayia faerie, she released the shell back into the sea once she felt confident enough to be on her own; her concerns turned towards her human family, especially her vulnerable young brother that Nika didn’t want to see exploited; she implored the spirits for guidance, and attracted Jasmine, the fragrant flower advising her to seek other beautiful people who could help her re-settle and protect her family)
Transition: Relocation (she contacted the merfolk again, who guided to the other side of the continent, introducing her to the pirate Captain Greenbeard, and through him Nika met Abigail and Leticia; she didn’t work very long for the pirates, however, as Queen Serena appeared to her and invited her into the Ensemble with the offer of boundless fun and learning, to which Nika readily accepted, only if her brother could be invited to live among them, too; fair terms for Serena!)
